July 4

1963 - Michael Sweet from Stryper is born
Born on July 4, 1963, Michael Sweet became the vocalist, guitarist, and primary songwriter of Stryper when the band formed in 1983. Combining soaring vocals, melodic guitar work, and memorable songwriting, he helped lead the band to worldwide success with albums like Soldiers Under Command, To Hell with the Devil, and In God We Trust. Through songs like "To Hell with the Devil", "Honestly", "Calling on You", and "Free", Sweet helped establish Stryper as the most commercially successful Christian metal band in history. Over four decades later, he continues to record, tour, and prove that melody, musicianship, and positive messages can still hit as hard as any metal anthem.
1964 - Mark Slaughter from Slaughter is born
Born on July 4, 1964, Mark Slaughter became one of the defining voices of late-1980s hard rock as the vocalist and guitarist for Slaughter. After first gaining attention with the Vinnie Vincent Invasion, he formed Slaughter in 1988, quickly achieving multi-platinum success with albums like Stick It to Ya and The Wild Life. Hits including "Up All Night", "Fly to the Angels", "Mad About You", and "Burnin' Bridges" showcased his powerful high-range vocals and melodic songwriting. Even as musical trends shifted in the 1990s, Slaughter remained one of the era's most recognizable hard rock frontmen.
1976 - Daniel Mongrain from Voivod is born
Born on July 4, 1976, Daniel Mongrain became the guitarist for Canadian progressive metal pioneers Voivod in 2008. Already highly respected for his work with Martyr, Mongrain stepped into one of metal's most demanding guitar roles following the passing of Denis "Piggy" D'Amour. His technical precision, creativity, and deep respect for Piggy's legacy helped power acclaimed albums like Target Earth, The Wake, and Synchro Anarchy. Rather than simply copying his predecessor, Mongrain found the balance between honoring Voivod's unique sound and helping the band continue evolving into a new era.
