1966 - Shirley Manson from Garbage is born
Born on August 26, 1966, Shirley Manson became the unmistakable voice and frontwoman of Garbage, bringing a combination of attitude, vulnerability, intelligence, and dark charisma to the alternative rock explosion of the 1990s. After earlier work with Goodbye Mr Mackenzie and Angelfish, Manson joined Butch Vig, Duke Erikson, and Steve Marker in Garbage in 1994 and quickly established herself as one of the era's most distinctive performers. Her voice powered songs like "Only Happy When It Rains", "Stupid Girl", "Queer", "Push It", "I Think I'm Paranoid", and the James Bond theme "The World Is Not Enough". Across albums including Garbage, Version 2.0, and Beautiful Garbage, Manson helped the band fuse distorted guitars, electronic textures, pop melodies, and alternative rock into a sound entirely their own. Active with Garbage since 1994, she remains one of alternative rock's most recognizable and enduring frontwomen.
1997 - Creed releases My Own Prison
On August 26, 1997, Creed released My Own Prison, the debut album that launched the Florida band into the forefront of the late-1990s post-grunge movement. Built around Mark Tremonti's heavy, melodic guitar work and Scott Stapp's powerful baritone vocals, the record carried a darker and more introspective tone than much of the mainstream rock surrounding it. Featuring "My Own Prison", "Torn", "What's This Life For", and "One", the album generated four Top 5 hits on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart and eventually achieved multi-platinum sales in the United States. Its success laid the foundation for the enormous breakthrough of Human Clay two years later and established Creed as one of the biggest American rock bands of their generation. Produced by John Kurzweg.
2003 - Avenged Sevenfold releases Waking the Fallen
On August 26, 2003, Avenged Sevenfold released Waking the Fallen, their second studio album and the record that began transforming them from underground metalcore hopefuls into one of the defining heavy bands of their generation. The album also marked the first Avenged Sevenfold release featuring lead guitarist Synyster Gates and bassist Johnny Christ as full members of the recording lineup. Driven by "Unholy Confessions", "Chapter Four", "Second Heartbeat", "Remenissions", and "I Won't See You Tonight Part 1", Waking the Fallen combined metalcore aggression with twin-guitar harmonies, melodic vocals, and increasingly ambitious songwriting. Those elements would become central to the band's later evolution, but here they arrived with a raw intensity that made the album a landmark of early-2000s American metalcore. Produced by Andrew Murdock and Fred Archambault.
